MISSION:

The purpose of Emmaus is to develop leaders for the church. Emmaus will inspire, challenge, and equip participants for Christian action in their homes, churches, and places of work. Emmaus lifts up a way for our grace-filled lives to be lived and shared with others.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

The West Michigan Emmaus Community is a Christian organization affiliated with The Upper Room, Nashville, Tennessee. The Upper Room grew out of the Roman Catholic Cursillo movement (pronounced coor-see-yo) developed in Spain during the 1940’s. Cursillo de Christiandad, the full name of the Cursillo, means “short course in Christianity.” The West Michigan Emmaus Community plans and sponsors The Walk to Emmaus in various churches throughout Western Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:

The Walk to Emmaus is a structured, disciplined ecumenical experience in spiritual renewal, operative both in the life of the individual and of the church. It is a 72-hour experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation based on the Gospel of Luke 24:13-35. In the gospel story, the risen Christ appears to two who were walking along the road from Jerusalem to the town of Emmaus on the day following the Crucifixion and Resurrection. The experience depicts the heart and soul of The Upper Room Emmaus movement, which begins with a three-day walk with the risen Christ, followed by a lifetime of Christian discipleship.
